Colic

Colic, according to NHMRC is 'attacks of excessive crying typically beginning in the first week or two of life and lessening by 3-4 months of age' (National Health & Medical Research Council, 1991).

It could also be due to allergens in eggs, cows' milk, excessive gas in the abdomen and infant reaction to parental tension.

Possible colic remedies are:

  • attend to babies needs promptly to reduce excessive air being swallowed whilst crying
  • offer more food and increase frequency of feeding due to increased demand of hunger and growth spurts.
  • remove baby to a quieter environment if the environment is too noisy.
  • suggest investigation for urinary tract infections
  • if due to overtiredness, try rocking baby gently or take him for a ride around the block in the car. The car motion usually puts most babies to sleep very quickly.
  • Gripe water contains alcohol; check with your medical practitioner if it can be used.

Whilst the above suggestions may work, always check with your doctor for the best advice as there may be other causes involved.
