Games with Babies
There are many different types of games with Babies under 12 months and over 12 months. For games with babies under 12 months, most parents are familiar with the game of 'peek-a-boo'. In this game, the adult covers her eyes with both hands and then whisk them away and say 'boo' to baby. Babies love it! You will usually hear squeals of laughter. It also reinforces the concept of object permanence where the babies view mother and baby as one entity. When mother disappears from view, it causes anxiety in the baby and she cries. This game teaches baby that even though she may not see mother, she eventually appears. This activity is for babies 6 months - 12 months old and is usually replaced by the game of 'hide-and-seek' as the child grows.
Play with Babies over 12 months:
- Safe Mirror: use a safe mirror that will not break, to show baby her reflection and say 'who's that'? Baby will be fascinated as she views herself in the mirror also looking back at you.
- Balloon: use a large balloon to bounce off baby's finger tips. She'll be delighted but watch that the balloon does not 'pop'! Babies do not like sudden loud noises of any kind. However, if there is no reaction to the loud noise, have
baby's hearing checked out immediately by a HealthCare Professional.
- Bubbles: bubbles are a great delight to small children but watch you don't blow towards their eyes.
- Singing: sing nursery rhymes to baby. They love your soothing tone of voice.
