Potty Training
Potty training or toilet training can be a challenging and arduous task for mums, dads and caregivers especially if the child has not attained potty training readiness. Most children are ready between 18 months - 3 years. Therefore patience is needed. However, do not despair as most school-aged children are toilet trained already and do not need nappies, therefore your child should be toilet trained well before school entry.
Praise your child when she goes to the toilet as she will acquaint potty training and toilet training as a positive thing. Some parents use the to award their children for good toilet habits. Both intrinsic and extrinsic methods should be employed.
Potty Training Tips:
- From around 15 months to 3 years, look for signs of potty training readiness in your baby such as his ability to 'hold on' and when dry nappy is evidence for a few hours or when they tell you they want a 'wee, wee'.
- Start toilet training when your baby can understand what you wish to say and communicate
- Use elastised pants for easy removal when dire toileting situations demand speed and action
- Ideally tile or wooden floor is best but cover other types of flooring until toilet training has been mastered.
