Sleeping Routine For Babies
Regular sleeping routine for babies helps them to settle and sleep more quickly. The sleeping pattern is developed through persistent but relaxed routine allowing baby to set the pattern that works for both mother and baby.
Babies sleep around 9-18 hours per day. At 6 months old, they usually are able to sleep through the night. Some can do that under 6 months old.
Baby is happiest sleeping next to her mother's skin where she can feel her warmth and hear her heart beat. However, it may not be always practical, so establishing a sleeping pattern that will suit mother and baby is best arranged.
The sleeping routine is dependent on a few factors.
Some points for a good routine are:
- Give baby a warm bath
- Massage baby gently
- After feeding, make sure baby is changed if needed and be clean, dry and comfortable. Do not wrap baby up too warmly with too many blankets.
- A cuddle with soft soothing humming or song is calming for baby. Baby will be soothed by the sound of your quiet voice not by your ability or otherwise to sing, so don't be shy.
- Place baby in the cot or bassinette on their back. Tummy sleeping is not recommended as it may cause problems such as SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Soft toys and pillows should not be placed with newborns for the same reason.
- Leave baby to sleep on her own if quiet and relaxed.
But what if baby refuses to settle...?
