The Flu

Babies can catch the Flu easily. The flu is not restricted to adults. Usually babies are allowed the Flu vaccine from 6 months old, but any younger they need to be shielded from sick people. I know of a couple who took their newborn to hospital for another health related illness and their baby contracted the Flu whilst there. The best way to minimise the spread of flu germs is vigilant washing of hands and asking visitors to do the same before handling baby.

If the mother happens to be infected with the flu, a doctor should be consulted early who can advice treatment to shorten the duration of the flu. If possible, a healthy family member or friend can come to the aid to help care for the baby whilst the mother obtains adequate rests and fluids which should hasten recovery. A flu shot before the cold winter season may also be advisable.
